Designing a Mandap for a Marquee Wedding
By Book a Mandap ·

A marquee gives you the best of both worlds: the openness of an outdoor wedding with the shelter of an indoor venue. For a Hindu wedding, it can be a blank canvas for a truly personal mandap. Getting it right means planning the mandap and the marquee together, from height and flooring to lighting and layout. Here is how to approach it.
Plan the mandap and the marquee together
The most common mistake with marquee weddings is booking the marquee first and thinking about the mandap later. Ideally, your marquee supplier and mandap supplier should talk early, so the structure is sized and specified around the ceremony rather than the other way round.
Share your guest numbers, ceremony layout and preferred mandap design with both suppliers. We are happy to coordinate directly with your marquee company and venue on access, timings and practical details.
Height, space and flooring
Marquee heights vary considerably, especially between the centre and the sides. Most mandaps need around 3m to 4m of clearance, so the mandap will usually sit along the central ridge where the height is greatest. Check where internal poles, lighting rigs and heaters will be positioned so they do not clash with the structure.
- Floor space of roughly 3m x 3m to 5m x 5m for the mandap, plus room around it
- A solid, level floor, as hard flooring is far better than matting on grass
- Clearance under any chandeliers, festoon lighting or ceiling linings
- Position of tent poles relative to the mandap and guest sightlines
- Space for the pandit's ritual items and family seating
Styling a mandap inside a marquee
Because a marquee starts as a neutral space, the mandap becomes the undisputed focal point. Lined marquees with soft white ceilings suit almost any style, from rich traditional reds and golds to airy pastel florals. Clear-sided or window-panel marquees bring the garden inside, which pairs beautifully with greenery-led or floral mandaps.
Consider how the mandap relates to the rest of the decor. Matching florals on the aisle, tables and entrance help the space feel cohesive, and our guide to choosing a mandap colour palette can help you plan a consistent look.
Lighting, heating and atmosphere
Lighting transforms a marquee, particularly for afternoon or evening ceremonies. Chandeliers, warm uplighters and fairy-light canopies create a wonderful glow, while focused lighting on the mandap ensures it looks beautiful in photographs. Read our mandap lighting ideas for inspiration.
Heating and ventilation matter for guest comfort and for fresh flowers. Heaters should be positioned well away from the mandap and florals, and in summer good airflow will keep both guests and blooms fresh. Premium faux florals are worth considering for parts of the design if the marquee will be warm.
Timings and the sacred fire
Marquees are often built several days before the wedding, which can give more flexibility for mandap installation. Installation usually takes two to four hours, and we will agree a slot with your venue and marquee supplier once the flooring and lighting are in.
Fire rules apply in marquees just as they do indoors. Some venues and marquee companies allow a small, contained havan with appropriate precautions, while others require an alternative. Check with both suppliers and your pandit, and read more in our article on the sacred fire at UK wedding venues.
- Confirm when the marquee floor and lighting will be complete
- Agree a mandap installation slot and vehicle access route
- Check fire rules with the venue and marquee supplier
- Plan whether the ceremony area will be turned around for the reception
