Indoor vs Outdoor Mandaps: Pros, Cons and How to Decide
By Book a Mandap ·

Few decisions shape the feel of a Hindu wedding ceremony as much as where the mandap stands. An outdoor mandap under open sky feels fresh and romantic, while an indoor mandap offers comfort, control and a dramatic sense of occasion. Here is an honest look at the pros and cons of each, so you can choose the setting that suits your ceremony, your guests and the British calendar.
The case for an outdoor mandap
There is something special about taking your pheras in a garden, beside a lake or on a manicured lawn. Natural daylight is wonderfully flattering for photographs, the setting provides much of the decoration for you, and many couples feel an outdoor ceremony connects them to the traditional idea of marrying beneath an open canopy.
Outdoor designs also tend to give you more room to play with scale. Wide lawns can comfortably take a larger mandap, a long floral aisle and generous guest seating without the constraints of ceiling heights or pillars.
- Beautiful natural light and scenery for photography
- Room for grand entrances, long aisles and larger structures
- A relaxed, celebratory atmosphere that suits summer weddings
- Fewer restrictions on ceiling height
The challenges of an outdoor ceremony
The obvious challenge in the UK is the weather. Even in high summer, a shower or gusty wind is always possible, so an outdoor mandap needs a dependable plan B. At Book a Mandap our outdoor designs use weighted bases rather than relying on ground fixings, and we always agree a wet-weather plan with you and your venue in advance.
Ground conditions, guest comfort and sound also matter. Soft or sloping lawns, long walks for elderly relatives, and the need for amplification so everyone can hear the pandit all need thinking through. You can read more in our guide to planning an outdoor mandap around the British weather.
Why many couples choose an indoor mandap
An indoor Hindu wedding mandap gives you certainty. Hotel ballrooms, banqueting halls and country house function rooms let you control lighting, temperature and acoustics, which makes for a calmer morning for everyone involved, especially older guests and young children.
Indoor settings also allow for striking styling. Chandeliers, uplighting, draped backdrops and lavish florals can transform a plain room into something theatrical, and your design will look exactly as planned regardless of what the sky is doing.
- Complete protection from rain, wind and cold
- Controlled lighting for evening or winter ceremonies
- Easier access, seating and sound for all guests
- A smooth transition from ceremony to reception
Indoor limitations to check early
The main constraints indoors are space and ceiling height. Most mandaps need roughly 3m x 3m to 5m x 5m of floor space, plus room around them for the family, the priest and photographers, and around 3m to 4m of ceiling clearance. Low ceilings, pillars or chandeliers can limit which designs fit, so share your floor plan with us early. Our guide on how much space a mandap needs goes into more detail.
Fire rules are another consideration. Some venues allow a small, contained havan for the sacred fire, while others require an alternative. We coordinate with venues on access, timings and fire regulations so there are no surprises on the day.
How to decide between indoor and outdoor
Start with your date and your guest list. A July ceremony with a younger crowd lends itself to the garden, while an October or winter wedding with many older relatives may feel more comfortable indoors. Then consider your venue: many country houses and hotels offer both options, giving you the freedom to plan outdoors with an indoor fallback.
Finally, think about the look you love. Light, airy floral designs and open-sided structures shine outdoors, while ornate traditional mandaps and dramatic lighting often come into their own inside. Frequently asked questions
Can the same mandap be used indoors or outdoors?
Many designs can work in either setting, which is useful if you want an outdoor ceremony with an indoor backup. We will confirm suitability for your specific venue and plan the setup for both scenarios.
How long does it take to install a mandap?
Installation usually takes between two and four hours, depending on the design and the venue. Outdoor setups may need a little extra time for weighting and checks.
Is an outdoor mandap more expensive than an indoor one?
Not necessarily. Every mandap is quoted individually based on the design, florals, venue and logistics, so we would be happy to prepare a tailored quote for either option.
